Wheeler Creek Swamp Angels
WCSA and the Tradition
The Tradition started with Dr. John Sauk (Doc) in Michigan's Upper Penninsula in the 1950's. It was a cement slab, hand-built cabin called, "Hell's Roarin' Creek Ranch." This is where Doc taught his two sons how to hunt.
Doc passed away in the early 1970's, and his youngest son, Jim Sauk (Jimmy), continued to hunt there for the next decade and honed the hunting and tracking skills Doc taught him. In the 1980's, Doc's wife (Grandma Elsie) sold the property. Jimmy moved with the hunting camp to Fred Cornelli's place outside of Gaylord, Michigan. Soon after, he was able to take his own son, James Sauk Jr., into the 1990's and teach him the ways of the woods.
For many valid reasons - too many men and/or too few true woodsmen, Jimmy began a new camp of his own at his youngest daughter's in-law's place just outside of Buckley, Michigan. Jimmy began his own camp with his son James and his two son-in-laws, Jason and Rick in the fall of 2000. Soon after, James brought his friend Eric, and the five of us became quite a close camp.
Jimmy passed away in February 2005, but the rich hunting tradition and strong, true woodsman tactics he taught all of us set the foundation for what we now call our camp, the Wheeler Creek Swamp Angels. Good men. Good camp.
